Okay, it's not a triptych and it's not about the Spanish Civil War, at least as far as we can tell. Perhaps Porter must count Jackson Pollock as chief among his influences but the bold lines are brimming with confidence and the blue triangle near the center exudes meaning on so many levels. The orange burst on the right edge of the mural evokes powerful anti-war symbolism as man's inhumanity to man is writ large across the work. The calm, peaceful, pacifist blue at the center is dwarfed by swirls of chaos that echo the futility of modern life. You can see the seriousness of the work etched on the artist's face, daring you to discover its complexity. The artist uses no brush instead favoring his hands in order to feel more connected to the painting on a visceral level. Hailed as a work of budding genius by art critics everywhere, Sister Wendy herself is on her way here now to view it firsthand before the emphemeral piece is washed away by an uncaring world obsessed with order and cleanliness.
